If you love having your nails done, doing someone else’s nails, or simply love the pulled together, polished look of a top quality manicure, then maybe you need to consider becoming a nail technician. It’s a world with endless possibilities and even though the economy may be suffering in some areas, women will still flock to get the perfect set of nails. As a nail technician, however, you’ll do more than just put a little polish on.

Are You a “People Person?”

One of the things that beauticians and nail technicians often say is that psychology should be a requirement for either job. It’s not just about polishing up someone’s fingernails and toenails, either. You must be able to apply artificial nails, or acrylic nails, that look natural, but are also strong. No one wants to break a nail as soon as they exit the salon! You will need to answer questions about the different types of nail products and which ones you recommend. Ladies will enquire as to the best length and shape for their nails. It not only takes knowledge, but a great deal of practice to produce a final product that your customers will love. If your customers are happy, then you’ll be happy as they return time and time again.

You’ll also need to understand the basics of foot massages, as this is often what many men and women look forward to during their pedicure. You’ll need to trim their nails, as well. It’s not as easy as it sounds. The first time you cut a nail too close, you’re sure to hear a few unkind words! Before you start thinking you’re ready to begin your career as a nail technician, it’s time to find a good place to get your training.

Where to Find Nail Technician Training

If you’ve decided that this is the right career for you, then it’s time to start looking at some training schools. You can find beauty schools that offer a full line of classes, but make sure that you choose one that is accredited by the National Accreditation Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Science. You can take your exams, both written and practical from the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology to earn your nail technician license. Licensing is required in most states, and it does require a fee. This license is renewable every few years. This career field is expected to continue growing by up to 28% by 2014. The job prospects are very good and in today’s economy, that a lot better than many other fields. So stop polishing your own nails while you’re sitting at home and get started on a new career as a nail technician!

Your customers watch the news and they know exactly what to look for in terms of cleanliness. You certainly don’t want someone to say they didn’t feel your nail station wasn’t clean or that you didn’t disinfect your instruments. Make sure you keep your station, tools, and equipment sanitized after every use to keep your customers safe and put their minds at ease.

Make your customers feel as though they are your most important client. Many people look forward to their manicures and pedicures as a way to relax and unwind. When you’re giving a massage, don’t “work on” your clients, but imagine what it would be like to change places. Give a relaxing and recuperative massage that is not too hard and not too soft.

Get a website. This is a terrific way to increase your business, especially if you can highlight some of the work you do. If you specialize in artistic nails, then these are definitely ones you want pictures of. Make sure your contact information is easy to find on the website and you may even want to add a special offer or two.
